Setting realistic Goals

Setting realistic Goals

Set Yourself Realistic Goals for New Year 2010  by Nuala Duignan

“What we do today, right now, will have an accumulated effect on all our tomorrows” – A. Stoddard.

As the year draws to a close it’s an ideal time to reflect on your achievements, celebrate your wins and start to think about your goals for the next year and beyond.

Do you feel like you’re always putting things off for another day?  By setting goals and working to achieve them you can grow into a happier you.   Mid December is a time to think anew, clarify situations, discard waste and encourage new growth.  Be ready to tackle the New Year head on! (Do not wait until the eve. of January 1st to make those plans!).  Most of everything that is achieved in the world is done through setting goals.  While many people may view this as superficial and mostly related to a business ambition, setting goals in all aspects of our lives is what helps us to move forward.

The best way to gain a sense of direction is  by setting yourself both short-term and long-term goals.  Many short-term goals can be aimed towards a long-term plan.  Take for example, taking time out to pursue your favourite past time e.g. swimming, which, (with consistent practice) may also enable you to fulfill your life-long ambition of becoming a Swimming Instructor. Or perhaps, your immediate goal of meeting your deadlines in the office  has enabled you to realise that you can, in fact, go for that promotion you used to dream about.  Setting yourself realistic goals gives you something to aim for and leaves you feeling more confident, empowered and satisfied.
Remembering the Path Remember why you started on the path that you have chosen for yourself.  Enjoy your daily progress and celebrate your areas of accomplishment.  If you do not have fun with the steps you take forward, what is the point in continuing?  Once you’re moving in the direction of your goals you will enjoy “the journey”.

“Most of us seem to spend our lives as if we have another one in the bank” – B. Irwin.
